Exploring alternative fuels for school bus fleets

Jenna Bush Hager

School buses have a great track record when it comes to safety. In fact, according to the National Association for Pupil Transportation, school buses are the safest mode of transportation to and from school. However, a bus stop on a busy morning can be a chaotic place.

That’s why Jenna Bush Hager has teamed up with the Propane Education & Research Council to provide a timely reminder of the importance of school bus safety and the need for more energy-efficient buses. As a former teacher and mother of two, Jenna says the safety of children is always on her mind.

We spoke to Jenna on Wednesday for the following safety tips and information on the benefits that many schools enjoy from having  school buses powered by propane:

  • School buses that use propane are quieter, safer and result in fewer discipline problems
  • More than 500,000 students will ride a propane bus to school this year.
  • Buses fueled by propane are providing long-term savings for school districts and private contractors
  • Buses fueled by propane save money as propane is 30 percent less expensive than gasoline and 50 percent less than diesel
